The Formula for Calculating Roof Pitch

To calculate roof pitch, measure the vertical rise and horizontal run of the roof. The standard formula is:

Rise per Foot = (Rise / Run) × 12

If a roof rises 4 feet over a horizontal run of 12 feet, the ratio is 4/12. This is called a “4 in 12” pitch.

Converting Roof Pitch to Degrees and Percentage

Carpenters often use X/12 pitch, while architects, solar installers, and engineers may use degrees or slope percentage:

Angle = arctan(Rise / Run) × (180 / π)
